A mayor in Nigeria, Africa, has been cuffed after 200kg of cocaine was found in his official car. The value of drugs is estimated at around $8.7 million. Sources told Reuters that the mayor and his driver, who were in the vehicle at the moment, were arrested with 199 packages of cocaine at a checkpoint on the road heading north from the Agadis desert shopping center.
Drugs were initially heading for Nigeria across the northern border as the ultimate destination. Following this incident, Interpol drug unit co-ordinator Ian Drapal suggested that drug kings were sending larger shipments in response to the growing European demand.
West Africa is thought to be a drug transit route from South America to Europe, and it has registered a record set of seizures in Nigeria in recent years.
Senegal seized more than two tonnes of pure cocaine from a ship on its banks in October. And last January, the Gambian authorities discovered nearly 3 tonnes of shipment coming from Ecuador.
