On January 1, 2022, France assumes the interim presidency of the European Union, offering President Emanuel Macron the opportunity to present himself as the bloc's leader before the April national elections.
Following Merkel's retirement from the post of German Chancellor, Macroni has presented an ambitious agenda for the 27-nation bloc, which could also serve his domestic campaign to win the elections.
“Viti 2022 should be a turning point for Europe”, the French presidency said a New Year's speech, in which it appreciated the European Union's role during the pandemic crisis, France24 writes.
Referring to the French presidency, he said: “You can count on my full pledge to ensure that this period, which comes every 13 years, is a time of progress for you.”
Otherwise, to mark the start of the six-month EU presidency, France lit up historic buildings, including the Eiffel Tower, with the colors of the EU flag on New Year's Eve.
