Djukanovic backs Abazovic initiative for government change

Montenegro's president Milo Djukanovic's Democratic Party of Socialists has announced it will support any initiative that will lead to the removal of the current state government. “The DPS welcomes the willingness of a part of the parliamentary majority to propose solutions with representatives of some minority parties that want [...]

“The DPS welcomes the readiness of a part of the parliamentary majority to propose solutions with representatives of some minority parties, which would lead to unblocking institutions and accelerating the process of talks with the European Union”, the Montenegrin president's party said.

That's what he answered. DPS towards the initiative to form a minority government as a model for overcoming the political crisis in Montenegro. This proposal has been presented by the ruling Citizens' Movement Bridge and the CIVIS Citizens League.

These two subjects, in the 2020 parliamentary elections, had competed under the list of black “above white”. In that election, DPS fell from power after three decades.

During the presentation of the minority government proposal, the Civic Movement Bridge and the League of Citizens CIVIS said on January 17th that in such a government there would be no room for the largest opposition party, the Democratic Party of Socialists and the strongest party of the current coalition, the pro-Serbian Democratic Front.

Montenegro's Deputy Prime Minister and Bridge Movement leader Dritan Abazovic has said this model is a possible solution, but which will not impose on anyone.

It is time to unblock the path to the European Union. If this situation cannot be resolved, the elections remain a clear solution”, Abazovic said on January 17th.

To initiate the government's dismissal in the Assembly, 27 votes are needed, while a majority of 41 MPs are needed for its removal.

With support from the DPS, which has 30 deputies in the Montenegrin Parliament, the Bridge Movement ensures the sufficient number of votes for a no-confidence motion against the government of Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapiq.

Montenegro's prime minister, Zdravko Krivokapiq, sharply rejected the warning of forming a minority government, naming it “magination” this initiative.

Krivokapiqi's government, which has one vote more than enough in Parliament, has lost the support of the ruling majority, mainly of the pro-Serbian party Democratic Front.

However, the Democratic Front has never launched a formal initiative to dismiss Government, which has not had the support of this party since mid-year.

Among other things, the DF has not agreed with the adoption of the Srebrenica Resolution in the Montenegrin Parliament, as well as with the dismissal of Minister Vedomir Llposaviq because of the denial of genocide in Srebrenica.

Zdravko Krivokapic's government was elected on December 4th 2020 with the votes of the Democratic Front, Democrats and Civic Movement Bridge as the expert government, while the only politician in it is the leader of the Bridge Movement, Dritan Abazovic, who holds the post of deputy prime minister.

Since the formation of this government, it has been the target of criticism and obstacles stemming from ruling majority structures, primarily from the Democratic Front, which has repeatedly sought out, but has never formalised the demand for the election of a new government.

The Democratic Front has been declared for the possibility of creating the minority government, saying “is not about the collapse of the current government, but about choosing a new”. According to this party, they want an executive that would reflect the citizens' electoral will, which they have expressed in the August 2020 elections.

While communities' parties support the Bridge Movement's proposal, calling it a real and optimistic opportunity to get out of the current political crisis, it was said in a joint statement issued by leaders of the Bosniak Party, the Albanian List and the Albanian Coalition. / T Ch/
