According to foreign media, initially angered by the rise in fuel prices for New Year's Day, protesters have attacked and burned state buildings and cheered against Nursultan Nazabyev, who held broad authority even after leaving the president's post in 2019 after nearly three decades.
Also reported, because of numerous protests, the emergency situation has been declared in Kazakhstan's capital, Nursultan.
In three cities, local administration officials were attacked, buildings were damaged and “used stones, sticks, gas and Molotov”, according to a statement from the Interior Ministry.
A journalist in Almay told CNN that they were experiencing an Internet blackout, and the lights are out in buildings near the residence of the president and the president's office.
Tokayev dismissed him from the post of National Security Council head Wednesday, while his cabinet also resigned.
Several reports quoting Kazakhstan's interior ministry said police and national guard troops were killed and injured in several regions Tuesday and Wednesday during Kazakhstan's worst riots in more than a decade.
Protesters took control of the airport in Almati, Kazakhstan's largest city, a well-known source of the issue told reuters. All flights to Almati have been canceled.
