Leondios Kostrichis, professor of biological science at the University of Cyprus, called the species “deltachron”, due to his genetic signatures similar to omicron inside delta genomes.
So far, Kostriks and his team have found 25 cases of the virus, according to the report.
“We will see in the future whether this type is more pathological or more contagious or whether it will prevail” against two dominant versions, delta and omitron, Kostrichs said in an interview for Sigma TV. He believes Omitron will also overcome deltacron.
Researchers sent their findings to GIAID this week, an international database that traces viruses, according to Bloomberg.
The deltacron vaccine comes as Omitron continues its rapid spread across the globe, causing an increase in cases with COVID-19. The US is reporting a seven-day average of more than 600,000 new cases per day, according to a CNBC analysis based on data from Johns Hopkins University. This is an increase of 72% from last week and a pandemic record.
