Vice President Pedro Silva Pereira ( S&D, Portugal) announced the names of four candidates in the shed on Monday evening, following the closure of the application deadline for the first round of voting.
Roberta Metsola ( EPP, Malta, Alice Bah Kuhnke ( Greens/ EFA, Sweden, Kosma Zlotowski ( EKR, Poland) and Sira Rego (left, Spain) will be presented briefly Tuesday at 9:00, just before the first round of voting Tuesday morning.
Candidates for the presidency could be nominated by a group of MPs, or a group of MPs representing the so-called low <x0-4”, which is a 20th of deputies or 36 out of 705 deputies when all mandates are active. Nominations can be withdrawn or withdrawn before any round of voting.
The president's election requires an absolute majority of valid votes, 50 per cent plus one vote, by secret vote. Remote voting will be held due to the pandemic. If, after three rounds, there are no winners, in the last fourth round two more candidates will take part in the third round, and the president will be elected who has the most votes.
The president has broad executive competencies and designated representatives in the 22nd Labour Rule. In addition to the listed tasks, the president has “all the competencies necessary to conduct parliamentary procedures and ensure their proper development,” the EP said in a statement.
