Battle “HMS Northumberland” had been handing over the submarine when the latter hit the sonar device hundreds of meters behind the ship.
The incident that occurred in late 2020 was seen by a TV team recording a documentary. A source within the Ministry of Defence in Britain said it is unlikely that the crash was deliberate.
Battle “HMS Northumberland” was looking for the submarine in the Arctic Circle, as it had disappeared from its radar, according to the “Channel 5” channel, which was recording the documentary, BBC writes, records The Express.
The British warship helicopter had noticed the periscope of the submarine on the surface of the water before the submarine was remanded, hitting the ship's sonar.
It is not clear whether the Russian submarine suffered injuries or damage, but the British battleship had to return to a port in Scotland to change the damaged device.
In recent years, increased Russian submarine activity has been observed, and British warships regularly patrol the northern Atlantic Ocean.
