A two-lane bridge collapsed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, early Friday morning, causing rescue teams to land about 46m inland, while others formed a human chain to help rescue many from a bus that was hanging on the bridge.
The cry occurred hours before President Joe Biden visited the city to call for approval of his $1 trillion infrastructure bill, which includes bridge maintenance.
Authorities said there were slight injuries from the collapse, but no victims. Also sent to the area were fears to ensure that no one was left under a collapsed section.
Police announced that the collapse of the bridge occurred shortly before 7am. A photo from the scene showed a bus of travelers left on a section of the collapsed bridge.
City officials said the collapse caused a gas leak, but the situation is now under control.
The chief of the Bureau of Fire in Pittsburgh, Darryl Jones, said that three or four vehicles were involved in the accident and that 10 people were easily injured, three of whom had been taken to the hospital. No one said he was in danger for life. Authorities told drivers to avoid the area.
In a statement, the White House said President Biden will continue with plans to go to Pittsburgh today.
Our “Ekip is in contact with state and local officials on the ground as they continue to collect information on the cause of the collapse”, the statement said. The president is grateful to the rescue teams that rushed to help the drivers on the bridge at that moment”.
