The media tycoon, billionaire and three times Italy's prime minister, who entered politics nearly 30 years ago, is aiming to enhance his career even the highest position in this state.
Berlusconi was convicted of tax fraud and was expelled from the Senate. But as for his moral example, 85-year-old who was seen many times in different evenings with younger girls, had declared that “I am not a saint”.
The current head of state, Sergio Mattarella, whose mandate expires on 3 February, has repeatedly said he does not want to run for president again.
Berlusconi also managed to free himself from charges of suspicions that a minor girl was having sex insurance.
He has been lobbiing for weeks with Italian right-wing lawmakers to secure their votes to be elected president on January 24th, in a four-year term.
In Italy, MPs, senators and representatives of 20 regions elect the president of the republic.
To win, a candidate needs two-thirds of his vote in the first three votes. In the fourth, a simple majority is enough.
Former Prime Minister Enrico Letta, who heads the Democratic Party, criticised the centre-right decision to support Berlusconi, as he considers “a deeply wrong choice”.
Each political leader (party) is divisive, but when we think of Silvio Berluckon in the history of these 25 years, it is difficult to think of a more divisive political chief than he,” said Letta.
Berlusconi has struggled through years of heart problems and other health problems. He was also hospitalised as a result of COVID-19.
