Armed Again Serbia, Buys Weapons From Russia

Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq, has announced a new shipment of weapons from Russia despite fears that major state investment in the military could lead to new tensions in the region. Vuciq participated in military training at a military base near Belgrade in which the exercise was involved in anti-tank missiles “Kornet” that were recently purchased, the AP reports.

I'm glad that our soldiers are pleased to buy Cornets from Russia. It's probably one of the best anti-tank weapons in the world”, Vuciq said.

He said the “Cornets are an important protection tool to remove any possible aggression against the state”.

Serbia has recently been accused of working with Russia to destabilise neighbours: Bosnia, Montenegro and Kosovo.

Recently, Serbia has mostly been armed with Russian and Chinese military planes, fears and anti-missile systems.

In recent months, Russia has given Serbia 30 battle tanks and 30 armoured carriers.

Serbia has also purchased the sophisticated air defence system from Russia, as well as transport helicopters and are afraid of China.

Vuciq said Monday that Serbia “remains on its European path”, but added that it will continue to foster friendly ties with Russia and China.

To join the EU, Serbia needs the support of all EU member states, but the government has maintained cool relations with the other Balkan country, Croatia, the last new member admitted to the bloc.

Croatia, which is also a member of NATO, is in a mini arms race with Serbia, which has recently received six MiG-29 fighter aircraft used by Russia and four others of its kind by Belarus. In November, the Croatian government announced the purchase of 12 Rafale fighter aircraft from France.
