US Ambassador urges mutual recognition of Kosovo-Serbia: I'll work on it.

US Ambassador to Kosovo Jeff Hovenier says that for the United States of America, normalising relations between Kosovo and Serbia is mutual recognition between the two countries. He says they'll help in this process. And yes, you can take my arrival here as an additional indicator of US interest. [...]

And you can take my arrival here as an additional indicator of US interest in helping our partners in Kosovo and helping authorities in Serbia reach an agreement on normalisation”, Houvenier said.

But what does this normalization mean?

“The US believes this should be a comprehensive agreement to stay in bilateral recognition. I'll work on it. I think you can see signs that and our European partners are making every effort in this EU facilitated dialogue to achieve that progress”, the ambassador stressed for RTK.

In the American stance, the ambassador says nothing has changed in terms of Kosovo.

“The sovereignty of Kosovo, the territorial integrity of Kosovo, these issues are not in question. They're set. I'd say these are historical facts. Kosovo is an independent state”, he said.

The American diplomat says he understands even opponents of independence, but reality says he is irrevocable.

Kosovo is a sovereign state. Some people may choose to oppose it, but that's what it is and people can argue as much as they want, but the reality and facts on the ground speak for themselves. For the US, the focus of dialogue despite difficulties remains clear. The challenge in dialogue is to achieve such an arrangement to achieve this normalisation. This agreement on normalisation of relations, and as I said, from the point of view of the US, should be kept in mutual recognition”, the ambassador said.

That American politics has continued despite the fact that in power there are Republicans or Democrats confirming the American ambassador as well. This becomes clear when it speaks of Washington's agreement brokered by former President Donald Trump and signed between Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti and Serbian President Aleksandar Vuciq.

This administration continues to have the position that Washington's pledges were important pledges and we expect authorities in Pristina and Belgrade to implement them as much as they can”, Hovier said.
