Afghan evacuees remain at Camp Bondsteel for additional investigation

Several hundred Afghans evacuated, some of whom are seen as security concerns, still reside on a NATO base in Kosovo, where they are welcomed by American personnel, some government officials said this week. Most of the approximately 200 evacuees at Camp Bondsteel in Kosovo are members of someone's family who is in the process of obtaining a visa, said a government source who was unauthorised to comment on the data, but was familiar with the situation.
A senior Biden administration official acknowledged that some of those in Camp Bondsteel were identified as security concerns during verification.
The fact that some people have been identified as dangerous by our antiterrorism professionals, intelligence or law enforcement for additional examination shows that our system is functioning”, said the administration official, who was not authorised to speak in the record.
American politicians have expressed fears that some of the 120,000 people who have been expelled from Afghanistan are security threats or linked to violent groups such as the Taliban, or Islamic State.
About 69,000 Afghans evacuated were transported to bases in Europe and the Middle East for security control, where most were later sent to US bases, with a smaller number displaced in Kosovo.
Some of those whose cases have needed additional processing have moved to the Liya camp, located at Camp Bondsteel in Kosovo”, a State Department spokesman said.
The 955 hectares camp, located in central Kosovo, houses about 1,000 troops from the US, Turkey, Poland and Latvia.
These troops are part of a long-term peacekeeping force in the country, which includes elements from 11 National Guard of state, as well as reserve troops and active troops.
At the camp, government officials review their data and take the evacuees to <x0 eventual admissions to the United States or shift to a third country”, the spokesman said.
The American Army deployed troops in Kosovo to work with the American Embassy in Pristina in a bid called “Task Force Ever Vigilant”, the Army's September statement said. The effort led to a contract to support long-term 1,200, an American Army statement said on December 21st.
Afghans continue to leave the base for departure to America, said the spokesman, who did not answer the following question of which countries are willing to accept those who do not behave in the United States.
Kosovo's Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not respond to the demand for comment. /stripes. com
