The country is currently under a strict deadlock following the discovery of a single case of Covid-19 broadcast by the community on 18 August.
The health ministry said in a statement that” a 90-year-old woman died overnight in the hospital”.
The last death linked to COVIED-19 in New Zealand was reported in mid-February, with 27 total deaths.
Prime Minister Yacinda Ardern expressed his condolences to his wife's family.
“Every death is a memory of the damage that COVID-19 could cause when entering our community”, she added.
