The volcano extends waste management network to all its villages

The company that handles waste management “Unity” has managed to collect about 27 thousand pounds of paper, over 15 thousand pounds of plastic and 197 kilos of aluminum during 2020. The same has caused him to invest 400 thousand euros in it for a year and a half.

Public Services Director in the Vushtrri municipality Shkelzen Xhaferi says how the municipality has managed to establish sustainable waste management systems in all villages.

We have a stable system of waste management and extended across Vushtrri territory... during the time of pandemic we have released all social categories, but the injection has been on a record level, more than 400,000 euros in 2020 and the first six months of 2021”, he says.

Thanks to collaboration with donors, Xhaferi says they have provided containers for every home. Waste collection is done by the company “Unity”, which has 11 trucks available. A team of three people per day covers 400 to 450 homes.

The task leader, Safet Ahmeti, says they are the only ones who do house-to-house juvenile collection while citing the elimination of illegal warehouses.

We go home once a week and get the trash with this staff we have. [...] Five years ago it was about 200 black dots, we made it to seven black spots. We've gradually eliminated, only 7 of them left, I believe, I hope with the help of the municipality that has been talked about very quickly will be eliminated”, he points out.

The remnants of every Monday are also gathered in the village of Jilioda, which is the deepest village in the municipality.

This village resident, Nuradin Krasniqi, says this municipality service has also influenced the village to be cleaned up.

We're very pleased, the village has been cleared, the yard clears, cleans the village, roads, better off than... Where we put him, where did anyone find a stream of that water, the children? It was no life. As soon as I get the trash here, we collect the bag for the week, the container is packed and taken, he takes it where the place is, or the village remains clean”, Krasniqi says.

The Vushtrri municipality has also adopted regulations for waste management on the territory of this municipality.
