A man was shot dead by police after entering a shop in the western part of Auckland, Prime Minister Yacinda Ardern said.
The alleged terrorist is a citizen of Sri Lanka who had arrived in New Zealand in 2011 and had become a person of interest in national security since 2016, under the realization that he was observed by authorities.
What happened today was disgusting. It was hate, it was wrong, it was committed by an individual, not by a belief, not a culture, not a nationality, but a person who was filled with ideology that was not supported here by anyone and by no community”, Ardern said.
This is the second terrorist attack on New Zealand in its new history. On March 15, 2019, a terrorist of white primacy killed 51 believers at a mosque in Christchurch.
