Home rents in Germany mount, protests

In Germany, increased housing rents have sparked strong reactions among citizens who have protested in Berlin to express their dissatisfaction. About 20,000 people took part in the protest to oppose this price hikes. Several parties were also represented during the demonstration, as well as union ties. Union union leadership member Stefan Körzelli requested that six years' worth of rent increase be prohibited for the federation.
“From the new government we seek to follow a new housing construction policy, which is based on creating affordable housing space”, he said.
Citizens demanded a change of course in rent and housing policy: stopping rent increases, not privatisation, and a ceiling for rents throughout the federation. These requests were also written on the demonstrators' banners, calling for: „A city with affordable rent from all”.

Participants in the demonstration demanded a referendum on expropriating large real estate enterprises. If there is majority, pressure will increase on the next Berlin Senate, where September 26th, along with the Bundestag elections, the elections are held.
Over the past few years, tens of thousands have consistently demonstrated in Berlin against high rents that make the lives of the most expensive citizens.
