The head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, in an interview with Spanish radio Cope.es has spoken of the problem between Spain and Catalunia and the latter's demand for division and independence. When asked about this problem between the Catalons and the Spaniards, Pope Franzescu, has cited Kosovo as the case of independence in Europe.
I'd say look at the story. There were cases of independence in history. They are countries in Europe that today are also in the process of independence. Look at Kosovo and the entire area being rebuilt. These are historical events marked by a number of features”, the Vatican's head for Cope.es has said.
However, it says that in Spain's case, the Spanish people must judge but specify that they must be judged correctly.
Francescu also lays out the topic of whether Spain has reconciled to history, especially with last century's history. He says that if such a thing has happened, then we should think of reconciliation among peoples. While saying that, Francescu says he should stay as far away from negative ideology as he says they are an obstacle to reconciliation.
In the case of Spain, you are the Spaniards to judge, giving your stand well. But for me, the most important thing at the moment in any country that has these kinds of problems is to wonder if they've agreed with their history. I don't know if Spain has fully reconciled to its history, especially the history of the past century. And if it doesn't agree, I think it should take a step of reconciliation with history, which does not mean giving up its positions, but to enter a process of dialogue and reconciliation; and, above all, to flee from ideology, which is what prevents any reconciliation process. Moreover, ideologies destroy. National unity is a fascinating expression, it is true, national unity, but it will never be appreciated without the basic reconciliation of peoples. And I think that in this government, whatever the sign, I should take on reconciliation and see how they continue the story as brothers and not as enemies or at least with that dishonest unconsciousness that makes me judge another as a historical enemy”, he said.
