Former Police Director: The tense situation, the faster the roads in the north open

Former Kosovo Police Director Rashit Qalaj declares that blocking roads north of the country cannot continue for much longer. He says the barricades should be removed as soon as possible and that Kosovo police have all capacities to pave the way there. Qalaj says the longer stay [...]

Qalaj says that the longer Serbs on the road in Jarinje and Brnjak can strain the situation further, while adding that it is more than necessary for these roads to be opened soon.

The former head of police in an interview for Kosova Prees also speaks of Russians who were seen among Serbs in the north, who say the Russians will always support Serb extremists to destabilise Kosovo.

Whether or not the police's intervention, I believe it should be done when conditions are ripe. At the moment I am very sure that they are waiting for a signal from the Kosovo government, and not to forget that it is only the Kosovo Police who can make the intervention for the opening of the road. It's not an easy operation... but the police have their capacities. As urgent as it is, it depends on the political developments that are happening and that we may not know. But I consider that in the vast majority of ways, it can be stayed this way, with the blocking of” roads, he says.

Qalaj says that despite the situation on the outside seems calm, the situation in the north is tense.

According to him, those Serbs who are currently staying at the Jarinje and Brnjak border points are aiming to escalate the situation. While saying it is the Kosovo Police that is being correctly proven and is not falling into the intentional provocations of Serbs.

I consider that beyond this facade the situation seems very tense, since you know that those people who are there look like most of them are not, even with their own will, forced by structures of either municipal or other parallels of the Serbian system, and I consider that especially now Serbia's recent propaganda campaign in connection with some of the cases that have occurred, if the Kosovo police are tormenting someone on the streets in Serb community, I believe there is no other explanation than the attempt to present and with the tension of the situation as much as<>

The former head of police says that despite Serbia's propaganda to promote international pressure on Kosovo there should be no withdrawal on the part of the government for implementing reciprocity on the license plate.

Serbia's and Kosovo relations are the same, only disseminates the differences we have and the appetite of Serbia to get involved in the internal affairs of Kosovo. I think that the government's decision should be implemented by the end, absolutely should not back down, despite the pressures that can be made by international circles, where at the same time we should move towards the quickest solution for the roads to open”, he points out.

As for the presence of Russians who have been seen among Serbs in the north Thursday, Qalaj says such a thing is expected of those who do not want the good of Kosovo.

Nothing new. There have been situations in the past that elements, who do not want good for Kosovo, enter Kosovo and operate against Kosovo, against its institutions, and what has happened... will happen in the future, always to support Serb extremists to destabilise Kosovo. And the good luck is that day by day it is seen that Kosovo has consolidated institutions, which are able to face any challenge”, he says.

Now six days in protest against the Kosovo Ministry of Internal Affairs' decision to reciprocity on the license plates have blocked roads at the border points in Jarinje and Brnjak.

During these days they have repeatedly provoked the Kosovo Police, already Thursday they have insisted that three of them have been beaten by the Kosovo Special Unit. / KP
