As for the Taliban, of course we need to talk to them because they're in power now. We want to take out people who have worked for German entities, especially those who have worked for development organisations and who now feel endangered “, Merkel told reporters along with her party candidate Armin Laschet, who hopes to succeed the Chancellor in the upcoming elections.
The international aid organisations should also be able to improve the humanitarian situation there”, she added.
Merkel said it is a good sign that the airport in Kabul can be reused for flights.
A Taliban spokesman told a German newspaper that the group was ready for full diplomatic relations with Germany. He said they didn't have “faltur” German co-operation with the US.
Earlier the European Union has declared it will co-operate with the Taliban, but that does not mean they recognise the new government.
Their rule in 1996-2001 was marked by violent penalties and bans on education or work for women and girls and many Afghan citizens, but and foreigners fear a similar return of their regime.
Militants say they have changed, but have not yet said which rules they will follow.
