The fire had been extinguished for about two hours and hundreds of police and soldiers were deployed around the prison to prevent the escape of prisoners, said Jakarta police chief Fadil Imran, the AP reports, Klankosova.tv broadcast.
Imran said at least 41 prisoners were killed and 80 were hospitalised, eight of them with severe burns.
Authorities are still investigating the cause, but the preliminary investigation showed a short circuit in one of the bloc's cells, Imran said.
Tangerang Prison was designed to accommodate a thousand and 225 prisoners, but there are more than 2,000, according to Rica Aprianti, spokesperson for the Justice Ministry correction department. Block C, where the fire occurred, was filled with 122 convicts, broadcast Clankosova.tv.
