Von der Leyen in her speech to the European Parliament for “Union status” has also spoken of the importance the Western Balkan region has for the European Union.

“Investments in the future of the Western Balkans are investments in the future of the European Union”, Von der Leenen has said. It has even cited EU investment plans in the region, saying that overall EU investments constitute 1/3 gross domestic production of the region.

During the debate in the European Parliament, Slovenia's Foreign Minister, Anze Logar, the country leading the European Union by the end of this year, has spoken on the same topic about enlargement and the Western Balkans, calling them a priority and warning that this topic would be dedicated to the EU's upcoming summit in early October in Slovenia.

On the eve of this summit will also be Von der Leyeen's visit to the Western Balkan region.

Von der Leyn has warned this visit as an occasion to send the message of the importance of the EU enlargement process.
