Single mothers in Afghanistan have always been stigmatized and affected by poverty. Now when this place is under the control of the Taliban, the least protection they once had has disappeared.
After Mazar-i-Sharif, the main city of the Balk province, fell to the Taliban during August 15th, an armed man had gone to take Rajhane's daughter.
She was a widow when her husband was killed by Taliban last year, and she has since done her best to feed her and protect her daughter.
After the death of her husband, she fought for custody of her daughter, and she won it because of a law in Afghanistan, where self - sacrificing mothers can support their children if they have financial future and are able to raise their children.
Now, when her city is in the hands of the Taliban, Rajhania is alone.
After Mazar-i-Sharif's fall, my brother-in-law came to my father's house, where I lived, and the Taliban asked me to give the girl”, Rajhania said of The Guardian.
However, she was fortunate, where she and her daughter had not been at home when armed men went and heard that they had asked her to flee to Kabul.
They wanted to take my daughter away. We're hiding in flour bags in a truck, and when the driver found us, we begged him to take us to Kabul”, she added.
In the Afghan capital, Rajhania went from one embassy to another, seeking help. Finally, her sister living in Great Britain was both able to take her to safety. Now they're in Manchester.
I was able to leave Afghanistan, after many challenges. I am so happy that the girl is with me”, Rajhania said thanking the government of Great Britain.
