Borell has indicated that he is continuing to follow the situation closely in northern Kosovo and that, according to him, any further provocation or unilateral and uncoordinated actions are unacceptable.
I continue to closely follow the situation in northern Kosovo. Serbia and Kosovo must unconditionally escalate the situation on the ground, immediately attracting special police units and dismantled roadblocks. Any further provocation or unilateral and uncoordinated actions are unacceptable”, he has declared.
According to him, Kosovo and Serbia must find solutions to ease the situation and agree on the road ahead, so even as he has said, the two states will be responsible for any risks to the security and welfare of local communities.
“The EU will actively support these efforts. The leaders of Kosovo and Serbia are fully responsible for any risks to the security and well-being of local communities in both Kosovo and Serbia. I stressed this in my calls with President Vucic and Prime Minister Kurti this week”, he stressed.
Borell has said further that the EU facilitated dialogue continues to be the only platform to address and resolve all open issues between the parties, including those related to freedom of movement and license plates.
The two chief negotiators who come to Brussels the following days is the first positive step. The bottom line is that they come with a mandate to discuss the way forward and find sustainable solutions that are in the interest of citizens. We repeat that we expect Kosovo and Serbia to return to promoting a favourable environment for reconciliation, regional stability and better co-operation of their citizens. This is essential for achieving a comprehensive and legally binding agreement for the normalisation of their relations, which both need to progress on their respective European ways”, he has added.
Borell has said he is in close contact with NATO Secretary General, whom he thanked for the excellent co-operation between KFOR and EULEX.
“KFOR plays a key role in supporting regional stability in the Western Balkans”, he said.
