Asked if he was concerned that China would finance the group, which is sanctioned by American law, President Biden told reporters, “Kina has a real problem with the Taliban. So they'll try to reach a deal, I'm sure. Like Pakistan, like Russia, like Iran. They're all trying to understand what they should do now “.
The United States and the Seventh Group have agreed to co-ordinate their response to the Taliban, and Washington has blocked the Taliban's approach to Afghanistan reserves, most of which are maintained by the New York Federal Reserve, to ensure that they fulfil their promises by respecting women's rights and international law.
But experts say much of that economic power will be lost if China, Russia, or other countries extend funds to the Taliban.
Italy, the current president of the Group of 20 main economies, which include China and Russia, has tried to organise a virtual G20 meeting on Afghanistan, but no date has been announced, suggesting disagreement between the group.
The state adviser and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on a call 29 August that the international community should engage with the Taliban and “guide them” positively.
China has not officially recognised the Taliban as the new rulers of Afghanistan, but Wang in July hosted Mullah Baradarin, who has since been appointed as deputy prime minister, and has said the world should lead and support the country as it moves to a new government instead of putting more pressure on it. / VOA
