On Wednesday the Senate attended the House of Representatives, despite opposition from the political left, which argued the move is a violation of fundamental rights. Justice Minister Karin Keller-Sutter said the new move would only be implemented on extraordinary occasions.
Imigration authorities carried out a six-month similar pilot project in 2017-18, and said it had yielded useful results in about 15% of the cases.
In another decision, the Senate also attended the next parliamentary chamber in the adoption of a mandatory test for asylum seekers awaiting deportation. The measure applies to people over the age of 15. It remains valid until the end of 2022.
