The criminal group is believed to have been managing cannabis plantations in Spain where they cultivated and processed marijuana before moving to other European countries for further distribution.
On action day, about 400 police officers on the ground conducted simultaneous raids on 42 different countries in Spain.
Some additional research was conducted several days later. At the media conference held Wednesday in Spain, Albanian Police Director-General Ardi Veliu was also present, who said Albania's police have indicated that he is “a reliable partner for all law enforcement agencies”.
After a year of long investigative work, the finalisation of this major international operation, where Albanian police have been direct contributors to the exchange of information for all Albanian citizens involved and in concrete actions with Albanian Police officers”, Veliu said.
On the other hand, Spanish Police Mobile Squad Crime Division chief Ramón Chacón, giving details about the action, said Albanians “are the cancerers of Spain's “cannabis.
The “Operation lasted one year and is the largest operation against the Albanian mafia. It's important because we normally have a lot of cannabis plantations. We are exporters to Europe, demand from Germany is on the rise. The Albanians who come in here are the mareia sexists, because they contact the Spanish mafia that handles grassing houses and then find the buyers. Therefore, it is important to co-operate with Albanian police”, Chacón said.
In a media communiqué issued by Europol, it is said, among other things, that this clan-based criminal group was structured hierarchically, with branches operating internationally. Some of its arrested members have a history of drug trafficking in various countries.
“Europol supported this investigation by providing adaptable expertise and broad analysis support and facilitating the exchange of information through its secure channels. On action day, a virtual command post was created by Europol to ensure perfect co-ordination among all the authorities involved”, the communique said.
During this megaoperation, checks were conducted in 51 environments, of which 23 plantations/house grass plants were destroyed, some 25,000 narcotic cannabis were seized, totaling 938kg of cannabis boce, a detonator, two firearms, three luxury vehicles, a wireless blocker, and 68,760 euros.
