Over 1,000 cases of violence against women were reported in 2021, some ended in murder

Every passing day comes a new case in the police and the media about the violence women experience. Police say they are engaged in preventing these cases, but civil data and society say otherwise. During 2019 alone, there are four cases when men took their wives' lives. [...]

During 2019 alone, there are four cases when men took their wives' lives. But not to be overlooked either in 2020, which sent to five victims killed by their mates, in the meantime three cases of family murder were reported in the past year, but that many of the perpetrators have not yet been caught by the law organs.

Kosovo police made this known in a written response to Kosova Prees.

Police say they are consistently engaged in preventing these cases. However, statistics show that cases have only increased year-on-year.

Kosovo's “Police have since the establishment dealt with cases of domestic violence seriously. Kosovo police have consistently co-operated with relevant institutions to prevent and if they happen to deal with domestic violence cases. Police have used various forms to achieve this goal, such as campaigns, distribution of paper-painting with concrete orders, school lectures, etc. Of course, media cooperation and social networking has helped to spread our message and reach as many people as possible, which is our primary goal because after our awareness, it comes to increasing reports of such cases. The year 2016 has 1225 reports, and in 2017, the number of reportings rises by 44 reports to 1 thousand and 269 but is not left behind in the year 2018, where the number of reporting increases by 264 cases. In the meantime, 2019 brings the number of reportings to a thousand and 914, then is 2020, with the number of reportings being 2 thousand and 69, and last year with a thousand 374 reporting”, ” said in response to the Kosovo Police.

Adelina Berisha from the “Kosovo Women's Network” shows that violence in Kosovo is a highly expressed phenomenon, with over 80% of this violence being women and girls.

It also shows that in 2020 there were over 2060 cases of domestic violence, while according to a 2015 research, 68% of Kosovo women have experienced domestic violence during their lifetime.

“in Kosovo domestic violence is quite expressed by data from institutions, especially by police who are like the first door where victims go to report violence. Over 80% of domestic violence is women and girls, the rest may be children and may be older, much less affected by men and boys, more boys and fewer men. As far as they are lying, I know the years have been over 2060 cases of domestic violence. For this period at the moment, I don't have the data here, while in terms of family alignment, research into the network of women made in 2015 has found that around 68% of Kosovo women have experienced some form of domestic violence during their lifetime, are only related to domestic violence. Both within the family and in public spaces women are affected and violence is subjected to women in various forms, whether physical, sexual, economic, or psychological forms, it says.

She says that women who are violated settle in shelters where they have a right to stay for up to six months, but there are times when shelters have been kept up to a year. That, according to her, is not a solution.

“We have social work centers that will have to be willing to help women who experience violence, but especially their focus should be children who are prey or victims why their parents are in violent relationships. On the other hand, we have shelters that make housing and psychological and social and social counseling for domestic violence victims, but in shelters under domestic legislation, victims can stay up to six months, that doesn't mean that victims leave after six months, we have times where shelters are open market and they've been holding victims longer, but that's not a solution because even if they stay a year they still have to leave these” housing, it shows.
