The head of the US Central Command met with senior Taliban leaders and called for their fighters not to interrupt the US evacuation operation at the Afghan airport in Kabul, a senior US military official reported.
He said that at the meeting held yesterday in Doha, Qatar, General Frank Mackenzie received approval of the Taliban to create an agreement under which evacuation operations at the airport in Kabul could continue without the intervention of the country's new rulers.
The official did not want his name given because he does not have the official approval to talk about these sensitive talks.
He said Mackenzie called on the Taliban not to interrupt the evacuation and said the US Army will strongly respond to protecting the airport if necessary.
The Taliban took power in Afghanistan in a quick offensive two weeks before the United States planned to complete their troop withdrawal after a costly 20-year presence.
