The profiles of several leading media in the country, including Kurir, Informer, Tanjug, Politika, Televizija Happy, Pink, Prva, B92 and RTS now hold the reader's announcement that they are <x0Mede co-operate with the state”.
As noted in the regulation of this social network, Twitter defines state-related media as <x0Media, where the state exercises control over editorial content through financial resources, direct or indirect political pressures and/or control over production and distribution of information”.
Media in question are widely perceived as pro-government because of their very positive report to the government and harsh criticism of the opposition.
According to the executive director of the Institute for European Affairs in Serbia, Naim Beshiri of media independence in this country is a limited category.
“Twitter finally targeted media that are in co-operation with authorities in Serbia, simply that, if you don't know, media independence in Serbia is a limited category. In other words, everyone reports as the cabinet says, and in exchange they receive salaries. Exceptions are rare”, Beshiri writes on Facebook.
While, for security expert Mentor Hoxhaj, identifying these media allows readers to understand more easily the news if it is unilateral, there are political backgrounds, it is false or propaganda.
One of the measures social networks have taken in terms of media transparency is and that the reader realises that the media is close, in this case with the government. This enables readers to understand better the news and propaganda. Not only when the news may be biased but also in cases of disinforming campaign for a certain purpose. The reader on these occasions, news published by these media receives in reserve”, Hoxhaj says.
Last year, Twitter erased 8,558 accounts included in the non-identified <x0 operations player”, or about 43 million tweets of the Serbian opposition, independent media and President Aleksandar Vuciq's power critics.
