Turkey has evacuated at least 40 senior Afghan government officials from Kabul on Monday, hiding in a Turkish Airlines repatriation flight that landed in Istanbul with 324 passengers aboard.
Among them are; Deputy President Sarwar Danis, Foreign Minister Mohammad Hanif Atmar and the head of the National Security Directorate, Ahmad Zia Sray, as well as three other former ministers and several deputies.
The news has spread to local media, as evacuated officials have been placed in full security.
According to the media, the Turkish military assisted boarding operations, preventing many people from getting on the plane in the chaos of Kabul's airport. Evacuation plans have been organised in the previous days, ahead of the Taliban's entry into the Afghan capital, writes a2news.
“We are grateful to Turkey for what it has done for us. Perhaps the Taliban would not have put us in prison right away, but would have put our houses under surveillance”, said the deputy chairman of the Afghanistan High Council of National Employment, Enaytullah Babur Farahman, quoted by Hurriyet.
