Taliban leadership meets to discuss future government

The 21 August organisation will take place as the Taliban try to present a more moderate image after returning to power, while forces led by the United States evacuate after nearly two decades of war.

A senior Taliban official has told the AFP news agency, that the Taliban co-founder Muhammad Abdul Ghan Baradar will meet in Kabul and “liders jihadists and politicians for the creation of a comprehensive government”.

Reuters news agency, meanwhile, has quoted an unidentified Taliban official as saying that Baradar has been in Afghanistan “to delegate responsibilities to commanders to meet the leaders of the government preliminary, commanders of local militias, policymakers and religious scholars”.

This official has told the news agency that the Taliban plan to create separate teams to face internal security and financial crisis in Afghanistan.

An official of the Haqqani group, who has ties to the Taliban, is expected to attend the meeting of the Taliban leadership and has been declared a terrorist organisation by the United States.

The Taliban have promised the leader “otherwise” compared to the last period they were in power in 1996-2001, when they led through a harsh interpretation of Islamic law.

With the return of the militant group to power, concerns have increased over the harsh lifestyle of religious minorities and women who have been excluded from public life.

The Taliban have pledged general amnesty to anyone who has worked with the US-backed Government, but there have been reports that militants can hurt journalists as well as troops and former Afghan government officials.

The international human rights organisation, Amnesty International, has said that Taliban fighters have “massacred” last month several members of the Hawaiian minority.
