This is the first attack on this scale by the Taliban militants in the city for about a year.
Bismillah Khan Mohammad was not home on Tuesday evening when armed men launched a bomb in the car and fired the fortified area around the house, reports the BBC, translates Periscope.
His family was evacuated and four of the shooters were killed, officials have said.
The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack.
The group has also warned other attacks on government leaders. They come until the fighting has escalated into other cities after the withdrawal of American troops from this country.
The UN Security Council has called for immediate disruption of violence.
More than 20 people are reportedly injured in the incident.
Police have said four of the five attackers were killed after they managed to enter the minister's villa. The interior minister said this was a suicide attack.
