Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians are believed to have died during the savage rule of Joseph Stalin in the Soviet Union.
Sergiy Gutsaluk, head of the regional branch of the National Memorial Institute, told AFP that the victims were likely killed by the Soviet secret police during the end of the years of yet.
However, he said it was not possible to identify victims since the data was being kept in Russia.
According to the Ukrinform site, some 8600 people in Odessa had been sentenced to death by secret police between 1938 and 1941. /Periscope
