In a message to those Afghans left behind, Macron promised that with our partners and also through negotiations with the Taliban they would make it possible to let them leave Afghanistan, CNN writes.
“Will we be able to do it? I can't guarantee you that”, Macron said among others.
The last French evacuation flight left Kabul on Friday, with the final French diplomatic and military forces arriving in France on Sunday.
The French president also referred to a joint French, British and German proposal to the United Security Council to create a secure <x0zone” at an airport in Kabul to allow for continued evacuations.
Macron said such an act would pressure the Taliban to fulfill their promises.
If you want to move forward and have an open space for the rest of the region and the world, you have to abide by humanitarian rules and allow all the men and women you love to be protected”, he said.
However, the French president said negotiations with the Taliban did not presuppose a recognition of their government.
Macron, among other things, said this recognition would be conditional on three things: respect for the Taliban for protecting all those who want to leave Afghanistan, distance them from terrorist movements and respect for human rights and “in particular, the dignity of Afghan women”.
