What happens after the U.S. has left Afghanistan?

For the first time since 2001, there have been no more American troops in Afghanistan, after the United States completed the evacuation of most American citizens and thousands of Afghans at stake. Over 122,000 people have been evacuated by aircraft from Kabul Airport in the last two weeks, as part of US efforts.

But the end of US military involvement in Afghanistan raised new questions for the president, Joe Biden and his administration, Reuters news agency writes.

What will happen to the endangered Americans and Afghans left in Afghanistan?

Since launching evacuation operations on August 14th, the US has evacuated over 5,500 American citizens. A small number of American citizens have decided to stay in Afghanistan and most of them have done so to stay with their family members.

The US president's administration, Joe Biden, has said it expects the Taliban to continue allowing Americans and other people who want to leave Afghanistan to leave safely after the withdrawal of the American Army.

But there are concerns about how these citizens will be able to leave unless there is a functional airport.

Tens of thousands of Afghans at stake, such as translators who worked with the American Army, journalists and women's rights lawyers, have also not been able to evacuate and remain in Afghanistan.

It is unclear what their fate will be, but officials are concerned that the Taliban can avenge them.

The Taliban have pledged to allow all foreign citizens and Afghan citizens who have authorization to travel from another country, to leave Afghanistan, has been said in a joint statement issued by the United States, Britain and other states on Sunday.

What happens to Kabul Airport after the U.S. forces leave?

In the last two weeks, the American Army, through 6,000 troops, has maintained the security and operation of the International Airport “Hamid Karzai” in Kabul.

The Taliban are in talks with Qatar and Turkey governments, as they are seeking help to continue civil flights from this airport, which is the only way for many people to leave Afghanistan.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Sunday 29 August that repairs should be made at Kabul airport before this airport resumes civilian flights.

Turkey, which is part of NATO's mission, has been responsible for security at this airport over the past six years. The openness of Kabul's airport, as foreign troops hand over their control, is vital not only to Afghanistan, but it is also important to maintain supplies and aid operations.

What's the future report between the United States and the Taliban?

The United States has said it does not plan to leave diplomats in Afghanistan, and Washington will decide what it will do in the future based on actions that the Taliban will take.

But, the Biden administration will have to see how it will be able to ensure that humanitarian and economic crisis does not erupt in Afghanistan.

The United Nations has said that over 18 million people over half of Afghanistan's population need help and half of all Afghan children under 5 are suffering from acute malnutrition as Afghanistan has been hit by the second drought in the last four years.

Several states, including Britain, have said that no state should literally recognise the Taliban as the Government of Afghanistan.

What threat does the Islamic State pose?

One of the issues the US and Taliban can co-operate can be the threat posed by Islamic state militants.

Questions have been raised about how Washington and the Taliban can be co-ordinated and potentially shared in order to combat this group.

The Islamic state of Khorasan (IS-K), which was named according to the region's earlier appointment, first appeared in eastern Afghanistan at the end of 2014 and soon gained reputation due to extreme brutality.

This group claimed responsibility for the 26 August suicide bombing that took place outside Kabul Airport, where over 170 people, including 13 American soldiers, were killed.

Since this attack, the United States has carried out at least two fearful attacks on this group, and Beden and his administration have pledged that they will continue to retaliate against the group for the attack.

IS-K is a rival of the Taliban. But American intelligence officials believe this group exploited instability, which led to the collapse of the Afghan government earlier this month, to strengthen its position and increase recruits among the Taliban. / REL
