This has been confirmed for Radio Free Europe, a spokesperson for the US Embassy in Pristina.
“We can confirm that the US government is in talks with the Government of Kosovo about how Kosovo can help American partners in Afghanistan. At present, we cannot provide more details”, the US Embassy spokesman in Pristina reportedly gave Radio Free Europe.
Kosovo will house Afghans “without hesitation”
Institutions in Kosovo have expressed readiness to accommodate Afghan citizens, following communications they say they had with American authorities.
On Sunday, August 15th, Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani has declared that on July 16th he was contacted by US Ambassador to Pristina Philip Costett, who has forwarded to President Joe Biden's request that Kosovo temporarily house Afghan civilians, which she said had accepted “without hesitation”. She said that “Kosovo respects international law and the obligation stemming from it not to shut the door to refugees”.
President Osmani said the Kosovo government has formed a working group that will deal with organisational issues, in co-operation with American partners. Kosovo joins calls for safe evacuation of people from Afghanistan
The Kosovo government has also confirmed for Radio Free Europe that in terms of Afghan housing, they have collaborated with the United States of America.
In a response to Radio Free Europe, Luan Dalipi Kosovo Prime Minister's chief of staff said that “everything will be well closed”.
There's a lot of logistical and technical, security and social work we're handling very carefully. The US is our main ally and our strategic partner”, Dalipi said.
Institutions Without Answers to Preparations
Radio Free Europe, on 16 August, has written President Vjosa Osmani's cabinet officials, but also officials of the Office of Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, to learn about the latests in the process of creating opportunities for the housing of Afghan citizens, but they have not provided answers.
Free Europe Radio has been addressed to the Center for Asia to learn if eventual preparations have started for the acceptance of Afghan citizens as well as for possible housing capacities. But, the leaders of this centre have said that for all questions on this issue, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Government of Kosovo should be headed.
Ministry of Jobs Foreign and Diaspore (MPJD), has said it is continuing intensive commitment to identify and help Kosovo citizens in Afghanistan with the intention of leaving as soon as possible.
By Monday afternoon, MPJD is in direct contact with three citizens and is engaged in relief. They are in good condition and are not endangered”, the MPJD communiqué says.
