Currently, in Kosovo there are over 25 thousand active corruption cases.

This increase, according to doctors, has taken place as a result of excessive release of the masses and failure to keep the mask and the physical distance. According to them, the increase in numbers has also affected the low levels of vaccine.

A patient with COVIDD-19 in intensive care at the Infectious Clinic of the University Clinical Centre of Kosovo in Pristina on 26 August 2021.

Free Europe Radio has talked to Kosovo doctor Arben Shehu, who is a research researcher at American University “Johns Hopkins”. He is one of the authors of the Pfizer vaccine efficiency study. B NTech and Modernna.

Shehu says early release of measures has resulted in SarsCov2 infection spreading faster.

The low number of vaccinated people at the country level has led to increased infections with this virus, to be accompanied by respiratory, where patients end up in intensive care and unfortunately come to death”, Shehu says.

According to him, the vaccine is the best protection from variant Delta, which is the most widespread in Kosovo.

“Distribution as soon as possible of vaccines at an interval as fast, would have enabled things to stabilize and turn to normal”, Shehu says.

Shehu adds that the Ministry of Health in Kosovo should make more accurate information on the importance of vaccine and sensationalise citizens to vaccinate.

So far, over 260 thousand Kosovo citizens have received both doses of vaccine against COVID-19.

The number of people in Kosovo is estimated to be over 1.7 million people, while currently inoculated persons over the age of 16.

The U.S. Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) says that some data shows that unexplored persons, variant Delta can cause more serious diseases than preliminary variants.

In two separate studies, in Canada and Scotland, patients infected with the Delta version were more likely to end up lying in the hospital than patients with the Alfa version, or initial COVID-19. Meanwhile, the vast majority of people who were hospitalised, and of those who died from COVID-19, were unexplored.

However, according to the CDC, people who are fully vaccinated, and infected with the Delta version, can spread it to others for a shorter time.

Over 50 Serious Patients

That the vaccine is the strongest weapon in fighting this virus, even the nitrologi Lyrim Tfilaj, which is part of the Infectious Clinic in Pristina, agrees.

He tells Radio Free Europe that 118 patients are involved in the Infectious Clinic, most of them with oxygen therapy.

“One of the problems is also disrespecting measures. The failure to wear masks, gatherings in closed places, parties and these have contributed to the distribution of the virus. It is also the Delta version, which is easier to spread and affects pregnant children and women”, says Tafilaj.

According to him, most patients in serious condition are unexplored.

The Hospital Service and the University Clinic of Kosovo, in the daily report on August 27th, has indicated that the total number of patients with coronary extended to hospitals is over a thousand. Of them, over 950 patients are being treated with oxygen therapy, and over 50 are in serious health condition, the report says.

Citizens say they saw the fight.

On the balconys of the Infectious Clinic, there are many citizens who are caring for their families who are infected with COVID-19. Radio Free Europe has talked to some of them, who say the infections have increased as a result of the organisation of weddings and other mass gatherings.

Bahrije Ismaili of Gjilan, has been taking care of her husband, who has been infected with coronary and sick with COVID-19. She tells Radio Free Europe that he was infected at a wedding.

It's a disaster. No surveillance. People are not being guarded. We've saved enough, but we've been infected at weddings. Stop weddings, gastronomies, close these until the number of infected” falls, she says.

And Imer Qorri from the municipality of Drenas and Hajrie Aliu from Podujevo, who were caring for their relatives, say that for Radio Free Europe that the release of measures has increased the number of infected.

I don't know who can reason. I don't know if it was citizens' neglect, government. Discolates all night, weddings all night. Without supervision, without protection, nothing”, says Qorri.

The numbers are growing because we're not ready, but we're careful. Weddings to 200-300 people, gatherings, coffee. Why aren't those staying home sick? Those who aren't going to the wedding”, Hajrie Aliu says.

Since the beginning of the coronary pandemic in March 2020, over 2,300 citizens from COVID-19 have died in Kosovo.
