Gjakova Airport was built by Italian KFOR for military purposes, and has been used until 2013 in support of military activities for NATO mission operations planes.
While transformation of Kosovo authorities had taken place in 2013, following an agreement signed between the Government of Italy and the Government of Kosovo. While it's used today for the Defense Department's needs.
Gjakova municipality Mayor Ardian Djindini tells Kosovo Preress that problems with the functioning of Gjakova Airport date back to 2011, with the decision to concession airport “Adem Jashari”.
He says the contract for concession of the airport “Adem Jashari” has been unable to open at this stage at Gjakova Airport.
The problem with the functioning of Gjakova Airport dates back to 2011, 10 years ago, when the then government contributed to the airport Adem Jasharı, with conditions that have made it impossible to open the second commercial airport in Kosovo. It means then it's the problem and those who have done it must answer. The solution that the KSF with monitoring the airport is good for not to do so after degradation because it is an extremely big investment, the track is the same as Pristina Airport, meets all conditions for rising and landing”, he says.
However, from the ruling party say they plan to operate the Gjakova Airport.
LVV parliamentary group chief Mimoza Kusari-Lila's task plan says they already have a dynamic plan, which can turn a part of the function and make the airport a reference point for citizens of that area, not only for Kosovo but also for Albania.
It is evident that governments in the past have not had this interest [the functioning of Gjakova Airport]. In fact, the government has completely given it to the Ministry of Defense, there is no content activity there. Unfortunately, only has the degradation of assets that have been left by Italian KFOR, but I think now is the ideal moment and the fact that Kurti government also has the functioning of the Gjakova Airport for other purposes, besides military ones. We have a dynamic plan, which can turn a part of the function and make the airport a reference point for the citizens of the area, not only for Kosovo but also for Albania”, she points out.
It claims this airport should be functional for commercial purposes.
I am still confident that that airport should be functional for commercial purposes and, of course, within the rules set by the contract at Pristina Airport, but also of great interest to citizens as well as companies. It also means that it can be used for cargo, and it can also be used for aircraft service”, she says.
On the other hand in a written answer by the Ministry of Defence for Kosova Prees, it becomes known that KSF exploits the area of Gjakova Airport depending on the needs for training activities.
“KSF, as well as other properties in use, even the area of Gjakova Airport, currently but in the future, exploits it according to the needs of its training, operational and support units”, the minister says.
Kosova Prees has also contacted the Civil Aviation Authority over the Gjakova Airport issue, but have refused to be declared.
