Germany will donate millions of doses of vaccine through COVAX

As demand declines and life expectancy is limited, more and more German provinces are throwing vaccines into the trash. The surplus is now intended to be donated to poorer countries. The European Union remains far behind. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Bavaria has dropped a total of 53,000 doses of vaccines, more than half of which are [...]
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Bavaria has dropped a total of 53,000 doses of vaccines, more than half of which are <x0 ...ported denied” in July alone, writes deutschewelle.
“Rating the amount of vaccines thrown out during the summer is a direct consequence of the population's drop in readiness for vaccination”, the Bahrazian Health Ministry said at the request of German public service stations WDR and GDR.
In Baden-Wurtemberg, too, 4,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines expired at the end of July, causing them to be properly destroyed”, according to the health ministry there.
In North Rhino-Westpholia, 350 doses of AstraZeneca expired last weekend. And those “are properly removed”. This is, say those from the ministry, the first such case in this federal province.
Similar actions have been carried out in other German federal states in recent weeks.
Hamburg wants to return 6,000 doses to AstraZeneca in the next few days, Saxonia-Anhalt plans to return 22,000 doses, and Downside Saxony to 120,400 doses.
Since the demand for vaccine is currently much lower than supply, the federal Health Ministry has announced it will prevent sending vaccines they are entitled to, given the number of residents. In the future, only the amount they order will be handed over to the provinces.
Now that the local population has been deployed, Germany has announced it will deliver 1.3 million doses of AstraZenecea vaccine to the COVAX initiative, which distributes vaccines to poorer countries. The federal ministry also announced it would drop further orders for vaccines Johnson & Johnson in favour of other European countries during August.
On July 7th, Germany decided to hand over 30 million doses of AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines to third countries. 80 percent of this is destined for COVAX, and 20 percent will be given directly to individual countries.
According to an internal EU report from 2 August, the United States so far has given 59.8 million vaccine doses in 45 countries. Another 20 million doses will follow in the coming weeks. Europe only gave 7.9 million doses for 36 countries, out of which 3.3 through COVAX.
Late last week, EU Commissioner for Foreign Affairs Josep Borell criticised the fact that the EU, with its shipments so far slim to Africa and Latin America, risks losing influence in those countries over China.
