Former US President George W Bush has said he and his wife have seen tragic events taking place in Afghanistan with deep pain.
Our “Hearts are hurt both for Afghan people who have suffered so much and for Americans and NATO allies who have sacrificed so many”, he said in a statement.
Last month, the former president told German broadcaster Deutsche Welle that he believed the consequences of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan would be the worst “” for women and girls.
His recent remarks come in stark contrast to his hopeful remarks during a meeting with then Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai in 2004, when Bush welcomed the first <x0-fit in the fight against terrorism.
