Fires, which have burned everything in Athens, have been out of control. High temperatures and strong wind caused the hearths in various parts of Greece, such as Evia, Messina and Laconia, to be reactivated.
Authorities have evacuated hundreds of residents and tourists, while half the country is involved in dangerous flames. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis says the top priority is saving lives.
The worst “has yet to come and the threat remains ahead. We expect strong Western winds in many areas of our country. We're talking about unprecedented conditions, accompanied by numerous days of heat wave that have transformed the whole country into a powder barrel. Along with Civil Protection we have built an emergency plan establishing six regions, including Atticia, in the state of red alert. I call on you to limit unnecessary travel and to keep it alert”, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said.
Images coming from Greece are apocalypse. For days, a huge cloud of smoke has covered Athens, while on the island of Evia the fires advanced rapidly, reaching even near the coast. Hundreds of buildings have been burned down, as have thousands of acres of forest. Greek authorities have engaged numerous fire forces, as well as hundreds of land and air vehicles, in an attempt to bring the fires under control and extinguish. The flames are at risk and archaeological sites.
