Court in Croatia makes decision on Kosovo bus driver

Kosovo driver's lawyer, who caused the bus accident in Croatia, where 10 people were killed and 45 others were injured, Igor Cisper, said his client's detention was extended for another two months because of the possibility of escape. My client's arrest took two months [...]

My client's detention was extended for two more months because of the possibility of escape. I communicate with him, he's not in good health. He's in a very bad condition”, his lawyer said.

“We offered guarantees of 100,000 kuna (66,000 euros), but the court rejected it. My client talks to his family in Kosovo every day, but it's not good at all. And based on the situation, it's difficult”, Cisper said, and added that they are waiting for a traffic expertise in order to prove the facts.

We asked the lawyer if the driver had received threats, but he refused to comment.

Remember that that fatal Sunday morning at 6:20 a.m. on the highway near Slavonski Brod, a Kosovo bus came off the road. There were 69 people on the bus, 67 passengers and two drivers -- mainly Kosovo citizens working in Germany -- who traveled from Frankfurt to Pristina on vacation.

Ten people died, 45 were injured, 15 were seriously injured, and 30 people were easily injured. Among the dead was a mother and a daughter but also a mother of five. Another bus driver, the father of three boys, was killed in the accident.

The driver was arrested under suspicion of running a vehicle in an irregularly moving way - that he did not use traffic lanes but strayed. Police found that the traffic accident occurred in the manner that the driver, a 52-year-old Kosovo citizen, did not climb in the middle of the lane, but moved to the bar area where the bus was overturned.

The driver was charged with allegedly committing a criminal offence under Article 227 of the Penal Code by causing a traffic accident in road traffic, for which the maximum sentence is up to 15 years in prison.
