US Ambassador to Kosovo Philip Costett has thanked the Kosovo government and people for their readiness to accept Afghan refugees.
Through a Twitter post, Costnett wrote that Kosovo has once again shown leadership on the global level.
On behalf of the United States, my deepest thanks to the government and the people of Kosovo for your readiness to provide shelter to our Afghan partners on their journey to a new life. Once again, Kosovo demonstrates leadership at a global level”, Costnett wrote.
Kosovo's government has approved the Ministry of Internal Affairs's application for the provisional and immediate protection of persons endangered by the internal conflict in Afghanistan, who are in the process of applying for Special Imigrant Visas (United Imigative Vienna) to the United States, including their families.
In the government communiqué it becomes known that these persons will undergo verification by security institutions.
The government deems necessary provision of temporary and immediate protection to persons endangered by internal conflict in Afghanistan. These persons would undergo the process of verification by relevant security institutions in the Republic of Kosovo, in the event of the need for national security in order, according to the assessment of relevant institutions in the Republic of Kosovo”, it is said in communiqué.
Persons under defence according to the Government's decision, during the time of stay in the Republic of Kosovo will act in accordance with the legislation in force and enjoy the rights laid down under the Law for Asia.
Yesterday, institutions in Kosovo have expressed readiness to accommodate Afghan citizens, following communications they say they had with American authorities.
Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani said 16 July has been contacted by US Ambassador to Pristina Philip Costett, who has forwarded to President Joe Biden's request that Kosovo temporarily house Afghan civilians, which she says has accepted “without any hesitation”.
In Afghanistan, Taliban militants have taken control of the state.
On behalf of the United States, my deep thanks to the government and people of Kosovo for your willingness to offer to our Afghan partners on their journey to a new life. Once again, Kosovo demonstration leads on the global stage.
