Sobia Mantoo, spokeswoman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), has welcomed the evacuation of Afghan citizens through such bilateral and separate programs, calling for an urgent and wider international humanitarian response “”.
The overwhelming majority of Afghans are unable to leave the country through regular channels,”, she said.
She reiterated the call for neighbouring countries to maintain their open borders to allow people to seek asylum in light of what she called the developing “crisis”.
