The United Nations Organisation for Refugees's Senior Commissioner, Philippo Grandi, has urged Western countries to ban the deportations of Afghan citizens after taking control of the Taliban.
His reaction comes after several European countries, including Germany and the Netherlands, had announced last week that they had suspended the expulsions after the Taliban took over large areas of the country.
On the other hand, a number of other EU countries had pledged to continue with the expulsions, the BBC writes.
Grandi said it was also important that Afghanistan's neighbours, particularly Iran and Pakistan, keep their borders open to assist Afghans with their security.
He further stated that a large evacuation programme may be needed in a long-term plan.
