The Pentagon had earlier announced that 3,000 troops were on their way, and approximately 1,000 troops are already in Kabul.
In a statement issued by the White House on Saturday afternoon, Beden found that he had ordered about 5,000 American troops to enter Afghanistan to ensure a proper and safe recovery of US personnel”.
Days earlier, his administration had recruited about 3,000 troops for that purpose after the State Department cut staff at the American Embassy in Kabul and called on all Americans at the war-torn country to leave the country immediately.
Beden has commissioned Secretary of State Antony Blinken to support Afghan President Ashraf Ghan, conveying the message to the Taliban representatives in Doha “that any action on their side on the ground in Afghanistan, putting American personnel or mission there, will face a quick and strong American military response”.
As Biden sounded the warning, the Taliban militants approached Kabul following rapid progress in the last days. The Taliban have occupied about two thirds of Afghanistan's 34 provinces and are now about six miles [10 km] from Kabul.
