US General Mark Milley at a press conference by the Pentagon said Afghan security forces had the training and ability to protect the country, but everything remained in his hands “will and leadership”.
“Neither did I, nor did we have any idea that an army of such size would surrender on 11 days”, he said.
The American general was asked how US missions to evacuate all American citizens who want to leave Afghanistan can be successful, when some remain in different areas of this state and not at Kabul airport.
The State Department is working with the Taliban to enable the safe transition of American citizens to the” airport, he said. “We have the ability to do other things if necessary”, Milley added. The general also said that large numbers of people are being processed at Kabul airport.
“We are the US Army and we intend to evacuate all American citizens who want to leave Afghanistan”, Milley stressed, describing the latter as priority number 1. According to him, so far, the U.S. has evacuated about 5,000 people.
Earlier, the fall of Afghan security forces even commented on Secretary General NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, who considered it a “traged”. “There are many difficult lessons to learn from recent events in Afghanistan”, he told the BBC.
Stoltenberg blamed the absence of leadership and logistics by the Afghan government, not soldiers, who he considered brave and professional.
He said NATO went to this state after the US attack and a moment that America established the end of its military presence in Afghanistan had no viable option for European allies to stay. Our “Plan was never to stay in Afghanistan for ever, he said.
