We're alone. Our end is approaching”, Istiaias town mayor Giannis Kotzias told Greek TV Sky.

Fires that have threatened the northern suburbs of Athens in recent days have eased somewhat, but a fire in Euboea has lit and destroyed thousands of hectares of forests in the north and forced the evacuation of dozens of villages.

Forest fires broke out in many parts of the country during a heat wave, which resulted to be the worst in Greece in the past three decades. Tens of homes and businesses were destroyed.

Greece has deployed troops to help extinguish the fire, and several countries -- including Croatia, France, Egypt, Switzerland and Spain -- have sent aid.

More than 570 firefighters are fighting fire in Euboea, authorities said.

The Coast Guard has evacuated more than 2,000 people from the island since Tuesday, mainly elderly residents.
