Albania was ranked among the countries of a high working age population that is not activated in the workforce.
According to INSTAT's estimates in our country, the population, which will not work and rated in statistics, such as the interactive group, reached 32.5% of the total population over 15 years of age, ranking seventh in Europe for the highest rate of inactive population.
The index was highest in 6 other European countries, such as Greece, Croatia, Northern Macedonia, Italy, Montenegro and Turkey, where the inactive population reached intervals 32.6-45.1 %. The highest level in Europe belongs to Turkey.
In Albania the inactive labour market population experienced significant growth in 2020. As a result of the economic crisis created by the pandemic, many were discouraged to look for work because they feel that it is not available. In 2020 the rate of inactivity marked annual growth of 1.2 percentage points.
Throughout Europe, the percentage of the inactive population outside the workforce was on the decline from 32.3% in 2002 to 26.6% in 2019. But in 2020, this indicator grew by 0.5 percentage points, reaching 27.1% as a result of the effects of pandemic.
Employment in Albania faces a high level of informality, which at least with official indicators is 34%. According to INSTAT data from the work force poll at the end of the first quarter of 2021, 1,138,604 people were reported, but only h 35% did not pay social insurance.
Population outside the workforce includes working - age people who are not employed and are not classified unemployed because they are not available or are not looking for work for a variety of reasons, for example, because they are studying, caring for a family member, or unable to work.
But unlike the European Union in Albania, the population that participates in the workforce, which wants to work and finds no jobs, is very high. This part of the working age population is considered unemployed “”.
Albania's unemployment rate reached 11.8 percent at the end of 2020 with an annual increase of 0.7 percentage points.
Population participation in the labour force improved significantly in recent years. The record reached 2019, where 69.7 percent of the 15-64-year-old population were at work or in search of a job. In 2017 that index was 65.9%.
Analyzing the labor force according to population age groups is seen as rapidly reducing the workforce of 15-29 youth. By contrast, the number of job pensioners is increasing.
According to INSTAT data, the number of people over 64 who were reported to work reached over 86 thousand in the first quarter of 2021 with an increase of 30 % in proportion to the same period a year ago.
