Panjshire has a long reputation for resistance. His legendary military commander, Ahmad Shah Massoud, successfully defended him during the Soviet-afgan war, and then civil war with the Taliban, until his death in 2001.
At least two former Afghan officials have been confirmed hiding in Panjshire including Ahmad Massoud, Ahmad Shah Massoud's son, reports Bbc.
But analysts have warned that Panjshire is unlikely to be able to afford a full offensive by Taliban.
The resistance at the moment is just verbal, because the Taliban have not yet tried to enter Panjshire”, Afghan expert Gilles Dorronsoro told the AFP news agency, from the Sorbonne University in Paris.
Abdul Sayed, an independent Swedish-based scholar, also told the agency that the “Talbanes surround Panjshire from all over, and I don't think Massoud's son can resist much more than a few months. At the moment, he doesn't really have any strong backing”.
